Chesterton Feed & Garden Center

Chesterton Feed & Garden Center, originally Chesterton Feed & Supply, has enjoyed a history of more than 80 years of serving the Chesterton community. Since the early 1930’s, the business has changed ownership five times, gone through three name changes, and two changes of location. In the 1960’s, the business was evolving from a feed and supply store to an up-and-coming garden center. The name change reflected the times, and the store became known as Chesterton Feed & Garden Center. Through the mid-1960’s to 1980, under the ownership of Miss Laverne Burchfield, the store was remodeled and updated, including the addition of a state-of-the-art Lord and Burnham greenhouse. Modern lighting and shelving were added. The product line was expanded, and more emphasis was put on landscape plants, house plants, garden center products, gardening accessories and pet feeds and supplies. Chuck Roth, Jr., current owner and President, began working for Miss Burchfield at the age of 13. In 1980, Chuck and his father, Chuck Roth, Sr., purchased the store from Miss Burchfield. The Roths set a goal for Chesterton Feed and Garden Center to be a unique garden center with high quality products, personal service, and expert advice. They felt very strongly about supporting their community and involved themselves in local philanthropy and events. At present Chesterton Feed and Garden Center occupies 1 ¼ acres of retail area, half of which is devoted to nursery and landscape plants. With over 3,000 square feet of greenhouse space, Chesterton Feed & Garden Center boasts a very unique selection of flowering annuals, herbs and vegetables. The outdoor display areas containing over 7,500 sq ft of garden and patio décor are pleasantly designed to inspire creative ideas for the customer’s home and garden. The 6,000 square feet of indoor retail space houses departments such as pet supplies and foods, nature products which include wild bird feeders, seed and accessories, water gardening and farm pond supplies, home and garden lawn-care products, gardening tools, and garden gifts including lawn and garden décor. With over 30 years serving the community, Chesterton Feed & Garden Center has stood the test of time with a loyal following and is continuing to attract new customers each year.
